What Factors Influence Catering Costs in Bali?

  • Service style

Plated sit-down dinners require one server for every eight to ten guests and a larger kitchen team. A buffet reduces staffing requirements. But it needs a higher volume of food to maintain presentation throughout the event. Family-style service sits in the middle on both counts.

  • Beverage choice

Indonesia imposes a 150% import duty on imported spirits. An international open bar can add $50 to $100 per guest on top of your food cost. A package built around local beer and Balinese wine costs significantly less.

  • Venue logistics

Most venues in Bali do not have commercial kitchens. Caterers bring in their own equipment, power, and sometimes refrigeration. Clifftop venues in Uluwatu, jungle settings in Ubud, or island venues on Nusa Penida attract additional travel and setup surcharges.

Costs for Different Types of Catering in Bali

Wedding Catering

Wedding catering in Bali costs between $60 and $150 per guest, all-in. This figure covers food, standard staffing, and equipment. Beverages, the 21% tax and service charge, and remote location fees are added on top.

Guest CountEstimated Total
50 guests$3,500 – $10,000
100 guests$7,000 – $20,000
150 guests$10,500 – $30,000

Private Villa Dining and Private Chef Hire

Private chef hire in Bali costs between $50 and $120 per guest. A three-course dinner for 10 guests with one chef and a service assistant typically falls between $500 and $900 before beverages.

This format suits villa stays, honeymoons, anniversary dinners, and small group gatherings. The chef works directly with your dietary requirements from the start. This type of catering makes it practical for groups with specific needs: vegan, halal, gluten-free, or allergy-related.

Corporate Event Catering

Corporate catering in Bali costs between $20 and $150 per guest, depending on the event format.

FormatUSD per guest
Working Lunch (buffet or boxed)$20 – $45
Full-Day Conference (including breaks)$45 – $80
Corporate Dinner or Product Launch$80 – $150

Full-day conferences require three service points: a morning break, a working lunch, and an afternoon break. That level of coordination requires a dedicated service team and a single point of contact between the caterer and the event organiser.

Birthday and Parties

Social event catering in Bali costs between $35 and $90 per guest

A casual poolside birthday for 30 guests with a barbecue setup and beverages typically costs $1,500 to $3,500 all-in. A more formal sit-down dinner for 50 guests with plated courses and a bar package sits closer to $4,000 to $7,000.

Buffets and live stations are more appropriate for social events than plated service. Guests are more mobile. Layouts are less formal. Service is easier to control across split spaces.

Live stations give guests something to interact with and improve the flow of longer events.

If it is over three hours, you can always set aside some money for late-night food. Early departures can be minimised if a small fare is made two to three hours before departure.

Beachside and Outdoor Events

Outdoor event catering in Bali costs between $50 and $130 per guest. Four cost factors are specific to outdoor settings:

  • Equipment hire:

Caterers bring chafing dishes, cooling trays, covered platters, and generators to outdoor venues.

  • Ice supply:

Outdoor events consume far more ice than indoor ones. Most professional caterers factor this in.

  • Remote location:

Clifftop locations in Uluwatu, remote jungle access in Ubud, and island venues on Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and the Gili Islands all attract additional logistics costs.

  • Menu selection:

Cream-based sauces, soft cheeses, and raw preparations do not hold well in tropical heat. A caterer with direct outdoor event experience will guide you with the right menu.

  • Wet season:

Rainfall during the wet season is short, heavy, and unpredictable. Confirm the venue has covered dining and that the caterer has a plan for moving service indoors if needed.

Additional Catering Charges for Events in Bali

  • Tax and service charge:

Most Bali catering quotes are listed as ‘++’. 21% is added to the base price. This spans the 10% local hospitality tax (PB1) and an 11% service charge.

  • Banjar fee:

Most private villa events in Bali will require approval from the Banjar (local village council). The fee is around $300. It covers the event permit, community support and security.

  • Minimum spend limits:

Most caterers have a minimum spend for the mobile kitchen setup. It varies by caterer and season. Smaller events end up with a higher per-head cost.

  • Corkage fees:

If you want to bring your own wine or spirits, ask about the corkage fee before you confirm your bar arrangements. Standard rates in Bali run approximately $35 per bottle of wine or champagne and $47 per bottle of spirits.

  • Tipping:

Tipping is not mandatory in Bali. But a gratuity of 10% of the total service cost is a reasonable guide for international clients.

  • Staffing and equipment:

Tables, chairs, cutlery and linen are hired separately unless specified in the quote.
